Biggest Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp outage in 13 years on Monday night

Facebook shares on the Nadsaq exchange plunged 4.9%, dragging the entire US IT sector with it.

According to the Downdetector website, large-scale disruptions in the work of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp began after 18:34 Moscow time.

Traffic on Facebook dropped to near zero, while Instagram and WhatsApp continued to open, but did not load new content and could not send messages.

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone apologized for the inconvenience around 19 Moscow time and said that the company is doing everything possible to resolve the problem as soon as possible, finanz writes. But four hours later, Facebook was still down.

Problems arose with DNS, a domain name system that translates the literal address of a website into a numeric IP address. DNS records for some unknown reason disappeared from the routing tables, as a result, all Facebook domains became inaccessible.

Subsequently, it turned out that the problem was much deeper: almost all services within the companies stopped working: employees cannot enter conference rooms because they are connected to the Internet of Things.

The "cutting" of the social network of Mark Zuckerberg from the DNS (domain name system) may be related to an attempt to limit the power of those "digital giants" that brought Joe Biden to power in the last US presidential election, writes REGNUM.

Looks like Facebook accidentally broke its own DNS servers. According to cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs, Facebook updated the BGP protocol records, and with it the DNS, which led to the failure.

Interestingly, the crash occurred a few hours after the release of an interview with former Facebook employee Frances Haugen. She talked about several internal Facebook investigations that showed that the company's products are causing massive harm, and that profit is more important for her to curb misinformation and incitement to hatred.
